Tunisian but based in Paris, Azzedine Alaia had been a design assistant for the house of Dior, Guy Laroche, and Thierry Mugler from 1957 to 1960. Although his designs realized the height of their popularity in the mid-1980s, they saw a tremendous revitalization in the fall of 2000 with a major retospective of his designs at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Internationally known for his work in Lycra and knitwear, he fused his talent in sculpture with his design in knitwear creating exquisite female form. He describes himself as a "builder", rather than a couturier. Known as " The King of Cling", he is a favorite designer among the supermodels.
