Thomas Burberry began his career as a drapery maker in 1856 and developed a waterproof fabric which he fashioned into a coat designed after an agricultural smock. He then designed the "trenchcoats" for the British Royal Flying Corps, creating the first thench coat which was later trademarked as "The Burberry". The trademark beige, red, and brown check lining was introduced in the 1920s. The Burberry Company produces a complete line of fashion and accessories today.
