As an ambitious young shoemaker from Bonito, Italy, Salvatore Ferragamo became an apprentice in Naples at the age of nine. When he was fourteen, he immigrated to America and became famous in Hollywood for sandals he designed for Cecil B. de Mille movies. They were both stylish and comfortable. Ferragamo's wife and children kept his shoe business going when he died at a young age in 1960. Since then, they have introduced ready-to-wear clothing, handbags, and in 1998 a new fragrance to honor the founder, called "Salvatore Ferragamo". Today, Ferragamo shops are in major cities throughtout the world.
